Dissection Frogs Central Nervous System Essays - Nervous System

Dissection Frogs Central Nervous System Dissection of an adult bullfrog's central nervous system (CNS) Experiment consists of the dissection and analyzation of a bullfrog's nervous system. Dissection consists of the isolation of the CNS consisting of the brain and spinal cord. It also consists of analyzing the nervous tissue under the microscope. Materials needed: frog, scalpel, razor blade, dissecting tray, pins, forceps, scissors, microscope, slides, slide covers, water, blue dye, diagram of frog's brain, paper towel. The bullfrog's CNS is composed of the brain, which is further divided into the olfactory bulb, cerebrum, optic tract, optic lobe, pituitary gland, and the cerebellum. Also contained within the CNS is the spinal cord which in contained within the spine The brain was about an inch in length and ? of an inch in diameter. The spinal cord was about 2.5 inches in length and the diameter of the spine was about 1/8 of an inch. The cerebellum in the frogs brain is very small in comparison to the rest of the brain and also to the size of the cerebellum in other animals compared to the size of their brains. Place the frog in the dissecting tray so the ventral section faces upwards with the head pointing away from you. This will allow for easier access to the CNS since you don't have to cut through the skull. Pin each of its legs down to the tray using the pins. Using the scalpel start the incision at the base of the jaw. This will be a superficial cut just enough to cut through the skin. Pull the scalpel in a caudal direction towards the tail. After you've done this make another incision lateral to where you started the first one and another one where you ended the cut. Pull the skin back and either cut it off or pin it down. Muscle of the breastbone and abdomen will be exposed. Using the scissors make a deep cut through this, again cutting in a caudal direction to the tail. Cut off the arms of the bullfrog and remove all of the muscle mass. You must now remove the lower jaw of the frog. Using the scissors cut through the area where the jaw connects to the skull. This will expose a membrane covering the brain. Make a small superficial cut using the scalpel in this membrane. Using the scalpel, lift up the cut and then use the scissors to remove all of this membrane. The brain should now be exposed. Now you must remove all the internal organs. There may or may not be an egg sac, if there is try not to puncture it when you remove it otherwise it can get messy, but if you do it is ok. Remove all the internal organs until you can see the spinal cord. Now that you have isolated the nervous system you can remove pieces of it to view under the microscope. To do this, first identify the section you are going to remove using a diagram of the brain such as the one shown in latter pages or one out of a lab manual. Using a razor blade remove a small section of the brain. Set this on the table and using the blade cut away as thin of a section as you can. Place a drop or two of water on a slide and place the thin section of brain tissue on the slide. Place a cover slip over this. Put 1-2 drops of the dye right next to the cover slip. Place the paper towel on the side opposite where you placed the dye. This should pull the dye through and stain the tissue. After you've done this place 2-3 drops of water on the same side you placed the dye and pull that through with the paper towel to remove the excess dye. Place this under the microscope and observe. Any thin red, squiggly lines are vascular tissue. The stringy bundles of fiber would be the nerve tracks. After doing all of this you should clean up! Remove the pins and rinse those off. Throw away the frog and all the large pieces of it. Clean off the tray and let it air dry. The intact, isolated brain matter appeared to be gray, signifying that it was unmyelinated nerve tissue. It was narrow and each part of the brain was somewhat easily distinguishable. Under the microscope the tissue had easily distinguishable nerve fibers and in some cases it contained vascular tissues distinguishable

American Revolution of the 1800s essays

American Revolution of the 1800s essays The American Revolution of the mid 1800s In the midst of a civil upheaval during the 1860s and 1870s the United States underwent changes which were little short of revolutionary. Being one of the most complex and controversial periods in American history, it was during this time that many political and social reforms took place. Through the secession of the Southern States, the blood shedding of the Civil War, and the post-war Reconstruction period came many political and social issues that transformed the United States from what it was in the 1860s to what it is today. The secession of South Carolina in 1860 paved the way for the other states to follow and a revolution to begin. The belief that states had more power than the national government popular at the time led the way for the southern states to declare that the constitutional infidgements on their rights as states allowed them to secede. (Doc. A) Northerners and the national government did not agree. They believed in the necessary and proper clause that gave the national government the power to do what it deemed necessary to protect the country from both, foreigners and itself. With this in mind the Civil War began to reunite the country, for the only way they believed the country would be able to prosper was united with nationalism. (Doc. B) The Reconstruction period came after the Civil War and lasted till 1877. The political, social, and economic conditions after the Civil War changed life in the South for both blacks and whites, forever. At this time the Congress was divided politically on issues that grew out of the Civil War: Black equality, rebuilding the South, readmitting Southern states to Union, and deciding who would control government. Socially, the South was in chaos. Newly emancipated slaves wandered the South after having left their former masters, and the White population was spiritually devastated, uneasy about what lay ahead. Emancipated slaves petit...

Republic Polytechnic Case Study Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2750 words

Republic Polytechnic Case Study - Assignment Example Implementation of an ERP in any organization involves a life cycle from the decision to adopt it to successful roll out, with discernible implementation phases as characterized by the key stakeholders, typical activities, associated challenges and outcomes. Four broad phases can be discerned based on this framework. They are planning, configuration, testing and actual implementation (Kumar, Maheshwari and Kumar 2003, pp. 795). Other authors present the phases as involving planning, implementation, stabilization and improvement (Markus and Tanis 2000, pp.173-207: Shanks et al. 2000, pp. 2). In the case of Republic Polytechnic’s ERP, the latter framework is seen in action thus forming this paper’s line of discussion. The first stage that was undertaken in RP’s implementation of the ERP is planning. RP needed an Enterprise System that was able to support two considerations. These include their problem-based learning pedagogy and their commitment to an IT strategy tha t would render the campus paperless for faster, efficient and cost-effective processes. RP set out on an outsourcing path for the vendor of an enterprise-wide e-learning management system that would provide a package which could suit RP’s mission and strategic direction. All relevant stakeholders were involved in finding such a vendor, flexible enough to allow for the heavy customization that was necessary for RP’s strategy, to be rolled out dubbed LEO (Learning Environment Online). This step involved two representatives from RP.... o allow for the heavy customization that was necessary for RP’s strategy, finally leading to settling on Wizlearn Pte Limited and their Academic Version 7 package. Post-purchase tailoring was the next step aimed at customizing the vendor’s product to RP’s needs in the system to be rolled out dubbed LEO (Learning Environment Online). This step involved two representatives from RP. These are OAA (Officer of Academic Affairs) and OIS (Officer of Information Systems) and an external IS team from the vendor all of whom liaised together and held discussions that finally resulted in a heavily customized product plan ready to be rolled out. The next phase after the planning part was actual implementation of the settled upon system, done a few weeks before the opening of the school term. The system that was rolled out provided an optimum system for RP and her staff although it was not exactly like they had envisioned as it had not accommodated all their views. Stabilizati on was the next phase for the system. Although the roll out had determined that there would be no need for training of RP staff, it was still necessary to provide basic training on the core features of the LEO. In a similar fashion, the students were trained on a basic general IT course and then given a few lessons on the core features of the LEO by the facilitators. The last phase of RP’s implementation of their ERP was improvement. This involved addition of the features that had been suggested in the planning stage but had been left out in implementation. More improvements on the ERP were based on suggestions from three sources; the top management, the facilitators and the development team itself, with additional suggestions being drawn from the students. The LEO manager determined which improvements

Global Warming Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3250 words

Global Warming - Research Paper Example As the paper stresses recent temperature readings worldwide indicate a rapid increase in the temperature of the earth’s surface witnessed during the past century. The information excludes potential causers of the rise in temperature such as the urban heat island effect. The data show a rapid warming trend, especially during the past 30 years. The surface temperature data rhyme with other evidence of warming, for example the shrinking mountain glaciers, evidence of the decreasing polar ice cover, and the increasing ocean temperatures. Extensive research has been done to answer the question as to whether the witnessed warming trend is usual or whether it is due to the 20th century breakdown, which comes with the â€Å"accumulation of excess green house gases† in the atmosphere of the earth. As the discussion explores global warming happens naturally because the climate continuously changes over time. As such, the earth’s rotation gradually increases the sunlight intensity as the earth rotates closer to the sun. The sun acts as the main source of energy to earth. The output of the sun’s energy is constant. However, even the smallest of changes over time leads to climatic changes. Other factors such as slow or fast changes in the orbit of the earth changes the normal distribution of the sun’s energy across the planet, which leads to long term fluctuations of climate such as ice ages. Therefore, scientist cannot say that the sun’s output causes global warming, especially because there has not been an increase in the sun’s output in the last 30 years.

The very important process of recycling

The very important process of recycling Introduction: Recycling is one of the most important methods used to reduce or preventing environmental crisis. It is the process of reprocessing used objects and turning them into new material. Waste is mostly used in recycling and it has a massive shocking effect on our nature like global warming and recycling the waste is an effective way to reduce the global warming problem. It also helps reduce the use of natural resources which is as well a very big problem because we abuse natural resources these days. The usual method of waste dumping or disposal is either by air or water which causes severe pollution to it and by using recycling as useful method its can help reduce the pollution a lot. We can also save space that is usually used for dumping waste and turning it into useful places. The lack of the basic materials and the need to create new ways to help fulfill the needs of humans made recycling one of the biggest important industries in the world. It became such an important industry becau se it helps get rid of the trash and waste and the toxic substances and its releases gases in a way that suits the environment and not affect it badly. Around the world, the recycling issue became an essential topic of all important gatherings and events because it is a very crucial matter. Global warming, the extreme weather changes, extinction of animal and the sea and ocean pollution and the death of plants all occur due to the carelessness of some factories and their wastes and the gases coming out of it. Recycling Paper The process of recycling 1. Sorting The first step in recycling paper is making sure the paper is free of any contaminants like food, metal and trash. 2. collection and transportation Secondly you take either to a nearby recycling center or a recycling bin after that it will be collected by a worker. 3. storage A very important part of the recycling process because the workers separate the different types of paper and then sort them together to make different kinds of recycled paper items. 4. Re-pulping and Screening The next step is called re-pulping, the enhanced paper is put into a machine called a pulper, and this machine contains a mix of water and chemicals. It cuts the paper into small pieces of fibers which turns into soft mix and that is called a pulp. The pulp is poured into a strainer which keeps the contaminants out of the mix and keeping just the pure pulp. In a large cone shaped machine pulp remains in a spinning process until all the heavy contaminants stay at the bottom of the machine and the lighter ones stay in the middle and then removed. 5. Refining, Bleaching and Color Stripping Refining is the next step in which the pulp mixture is crushed to make the fibers bigger to make it ready for the next process. If the paper is colored it will need some chemicals to remove the color and if its white it will need oxygen to make it lighter and if its brown then it does not have to be bleached. 6. Deinking The last step is papermaking; pulp has to be mixed with water and chemicals. This mix goes into a huge machine called a head box and its sprayed on a straining wire track that moves very quickly. The water from the paper mix starts to drop and the fibers start to attach to each other and form wet sheet. The wet sheet goes into rolling presses which compresses the sheet and sheds all the excessive water and dries the sheets out. After that the sheets goes through heated metal roller to dry them out and the paper is made. Positive Effects of Recycling Recycling paper is the economic process of the first degree as it, helps to reduce imports of raw materials for papermaking and reducing unemployment and this through the prevision of job opportunities for young people. Preserves the Environment Recycling paper is working to safeguard the environment. For example, the paper is manufactured. There is also became a growing demand for paper, many of the trees divided for the production of paper. For recycling paper is available to prevent the destruction of forests. These days, we see a large number of forests to produce shatter for the production of the growing demand for paper. Recycling a ton paper helps to preserve our natural resources and saves equivalent 12 trees. Also, recycling paper helps in getting rid of the paper is doomed sound environmental manner, rather than burned or buried, leading to increased pollution and reduces the demand for wood and fiber and to allow the forest to increase their capacity to absorb atmospheric carbon. In addition, working on protection of agricultural land and places of throwing waste paper. Recycling Saves Energy Processing raw materials requires a great deal of energy. But any processing used materials reduce the energy requirements for instance recycling paper. Also the process of recycling paper reduces a lot of pressure on energy resources. How Does Recycling Affect The Environment? Positives and Negatives http://www.allfreeessays.com/search_results.php?query=Positives+of+recycling+paper The Negative Effects of Recycling Paper Recycling paper conserves energy and landfill space, maintains the trees and reduces defilement. Although it is a procedure that produces some emissions and products harmful secondary. This process is working to develop a lot of ground techniques. Energy Use Recycling paper conserves 28% to 70%. This keeping is debatable for of the sort of energy utilization in two operations. Using recycled paper fossil fuels whereas the production maiden paper appoints the litter products from wood to provide high rate of its energy needs. In addition, recycling paper requires less energy from the plastic but for the recycled paper bag requires more energy from the plastic bags recycling process. Harmful Chemicals In this process is necessary that the indelible ink from used paper. The facilities of recycling use several of chemicals like chlorine and process. There is a particular problem is print from laser and copy machines. The Chemicals that is much more from chemicals caustic than level requires removal de-inking chemicals. De-inking chemicals includes some ponderously mental and other vehicles. Solid Waste Recycling waste paper teems sludge that includes solids (very small fibers). Often these waste sent to the landfill including mental. Incineration is an ersatz however the incineration serves to disseminate dangerous emissions like dioxins and hydrocarbons. For the residual ash also is sent to landfills. In summary, recycling is extremely essential and we should raise awareness because people mostly are very oblivious and clueless about it. We have to recycle in order to maintain a healthy environment we can live in happily. Try to minimize the use of paper and raw material so that we can save natural resources. We should be able to live in a healthy planet a thoughtful life. We have to consider the fact that there are other species living with us in the same planet that our silly acts and unhealthy behavior have negative effects on. http://www.livestrong.com/article/159591-the-negative-effects-of-recycling-paper

Hamlet: The Wisdom of Polonius Essay -- GCSE Coursework Shakespeare Ha

Hamlet: The Wisdom of Polonius  Ã‚  Ã‚     Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The disadvantage of the practical man's world is that it breaks down, and refuses to work, and then he finds out, at the cost of enormous distress and suffering, that he has been working on a theory all the time, but a wrong theory; and he wishes he had done a little more thinking before it was too late.   Gradually it is becoming plain to a world which has always scoffed at the philosophers that a society run on the lines of Polonius, every man being true to himself or to his own class, will not in the long run work, but will infallibly explode, with hideous ruin and combustion, into chaos, and make way for a society which shall be less selfish.   In the play, Hamlet, by William Shakespeare, Polonius proclaims: To thine own self be true, And it must follow, as the night the day, Thou canst not then be false to any man.      Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   This is often cited as a fine example of the noble wisdom of our sublime bard, and so forth; whereas any one who looks carefully at these lines can see that if our sublime bard had nothing wiser than this to say about the conduct of life, the less we talk about his wisdom the better.   As a matter of fact, of course, the lines are nonsense, and Shakespeare was well aware that they are nonsense; he puts them in the mouth of a garrulous old gentleman who spends most of his time talking nonsense.   Hamlet himself - who obviously comes nearer than anybody else to speaking Shakespeare's own mind - calls Polonius a "tedious old fool," and it is plain that a tedious old fool is exactly what Shakespeare is trying to portray.   The rest of the speech, of which these famous lines are the conclusion, is made up partly of bits of cheap and shallow worldly... ...kind.   To do that is to be a philosopher.   There are not many philosophers;and the practical man is not sorry there are so few, for he is proud of belonging, as he says, to a world of practice, not of mere theory.   The disadvantage of the practical man's world is that it breaks down, and refuses to work, and then he finds out, at the cost of enormous distress and suffering, that he has been working on a theory all the time, but a wrong theory; and he wishes he had done a little more thinking before it was too late.

Dress for Succes

When I think of the phrase â€Å"Dress for Success! † I think of a person getting ready or preparing for a big job interview. Like when person goes to a job interview wearing a muscle shirt and shorts for a job that requires you to cook food. Or when a person wears super fancy clothes to an interview that requires you to clean bathrooms. â€Å"Dressing for success† is like a guide telling you what you might need to wear to make a good impression. Dress for success means to dress for the occasion. You want to dress for the occasion because you don’t want be out-of-order. An example of this is going to church in pajamas. That is an example of dressing out-of-order. Schools are even making their dress codes better. They don’t want the kids to dress themselves in tank tops and super short shorts. Some girls do that just to fit in. Those girls are dumb. Dressing for success doesn’t only apply to job interviews, but for many other things. If you’re running for long distances, you don’t want your everyday clothes to slow you down. How coul you fix this simple problem? You could get the appropriate clothes for running and it would help you by taking off unneeded weight and make you not get tired as quickly. When you are applying for a job interview, you should look nice. If you want to get a job at a bank, you should wear nice pants and a nice shirt, or a dress. If you are applying for a job at Hot Topic you could probably wear a T shirt from your favorite band and skinny jeans. Avoid too many body piercings though. When you go to a job interview or someones funeral you have to dress with respect. And nice. You don’t want your butt or boobs hanging out. You want people to think your decent and well-behaved. Another example is when you wear a tank top and some booty shorts to school. That’s not a good thing to wear. You got to wear non-distracting clothes. When you come to school you don’t really have to dress for success but you don’t want to come looking a hot mess. Come looking decent. I think dressing for success is important because people will make assumptions about you. If you’re in Wal-Mart and you’re wearing old pajamas with holes in them in all the wrong places, people will think you’re weird. If you’re at a school dance, casual, and you wear a wedding dress, people will think you’re lame and weird. If you go to prom wearing a dressing robe, people will NOT dance with you. When I think of dress for success I think of†¦ Say you wanna go to Adventure. Your friends are dressed in booty shorts and tank tops but there are hundreds of people they’re looking at you, is that really how you wanna dress? People don’t want to see girls in booty shorts walking around at the age of 11 or 12. I think people should dress a certain way. One reason is if you own a fortune 500 company and you wear flip-flops and a tank top. The workers won’t take you seriously.

Sanctions on Iraq essays

Sanctions on Iraq essays The sanctions that have been placed on Iraq by the United States 10 years ago are now being the cause of the death of thousands of children because of inadequate medicine, food and water. The united states have been asked by the united nations and many other countries to remove these sanctions over the Iraqi people so they can go back to living their normal healthy lives and the states has repeatedly refused this move. The whole reason for these sanctions is when Saddam Hussein borrowed money from Kuwait in order to be able to stay powerful on top of his war with Iran. He backed up his military with this money and it helped a great deal in the defeat over Iran. The years went by and Kuwait started asking for the money to be paid back. Iraq refused to pay the money and said that they did not have enough funds to pay of the dept at the moment. Everyone was aware of Iraqs chemical and biological researches that were costing Iraq a lot more than it would if they would intend to pay Kuwait. When things got out of hand and Kuwait demanded that the money be paid back, Saddam Hussein flexed his muscles and military and decided to show Kuwait that if he did not plan to pay then nothing can make him pay, he was willing to go in to war with Kuwait, this is when international powers got in to play with the game. The United States, England and Russia took very high offensive against Iraq and decided that they would escalate things in to a near world war. They bombed Iraqs power plants, bridges, water filters and many other necessities that people cannot live without. As a result people were living with no power in their houses and still do till today, they have no refrigerators for their food, no heating systems for the winter colds and not enough funds to buy medicine if a member of the family gets sick. After the United States and other international powers put Iraqs offensive to a stand still they began ...

Report on use of information seeking skills Essay

Report on use of information seeking skills - Essay Example My first impulse was to type in the search engine (directed by the pink arrow) the keyword "Nursing Health Care Teams Journal". However, upon doing so I got listings which were very vague and very irrelevant. The first on the list was about a nursing organization with no indication of what I was looking for. Then, I thought, if I was searching the documents manually, I will go to the library. It occurred to me that there was a library icon in the interface directed by the blue arrow. Upon clicking the library icon, I entered a site where there was a category dubbed as Resource which contained the subcategory Database. I figured that since I needed data regarding a journal then this is what exactly I am looking for so I clicked the Database icon. What appeared on the screen were search categories such as Database Titles and Database Subjects. These categories were accompanied by letters A to Z indicating the first letter of the title of the database. I clicked the letter N under the database Subjects as I was searching journals regarding Nursing. I was given a list of databases which started with the letter N. I saw the subject "Nursing and Health: A SAGE Full Text Edition" as I reckoned that since I was looking for the text of a journal, this would be the most probable place to search. What appeared in the screen was a text stating the terms and condition of use of the database and decision icons on whether I was agreeing to the terms of use or not. I clicked the "I Agree" button and entered my official username and password provided by the University. What happened next was that I was directed to the CSA Illumina site where I clicked Browse Full Text besides the Health Sciences: A SAGE FULL TEXT Collection. A list of the journals appeared in the screen where I clicked Policy, Politics and Nursing Practice Volume 1-7, 2000-2006. I chose this because I was looking for information regarding nursing and team health care. Politics and policy certainly applies to teams and organizations. I browsed through the available volumes and issues and I found many articles which relates to my inquiry. Among the many articles I chose the "The effect of nurse's use of principles of learning organization and organizational effectiveness" by Jeong, et. al. (2007) provided by the Medline database and the "Learning From the Best: The Benefits of a Structured Health Policy Fellowship in Developing Nursing Health Policy Leaders"

Finance- Israel Stock Exchange Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Finance- Israel Stock Exchange - Essay Example Globes, Israel Business Arena is one of the leading business publications in Israel. This article reports on a the Deloitte 2010 Global Venture Capital Survey, carried out in conjunction with venture capital associations around the world. The headline captures the negative results of the survey and the bad news for the Israeli stock market. The survey found that the majority of venture capital firms were looking first and foremost to increase their foreign investment in China (27%) and then India (14%). The article does not contain the precise numbers for Israel but notes that interest has fallen since 2009. Commenting on the results, Igal Brightman CPA, chairman and CEO of Deloitte Brightman Almagor Zohar & Co.and managing partner of the TMT group in Deloitte, said, "The migration of venture capital eastward indicates that the global high-tech industry is seeking new growth opportunities. The main indicators in the Israeli economy, among them accession to the OECD, the fall in the shekel-dollar exchange rate and the rise in salary levels, make Israel less attractive in comparison with the alternatives." This is very bad news for the Israeli economy as foreign venture capital investment, particularly in the hi-tech sector has been a key engine of growth in the Israeli economy and stock market in the past. Daniel, Robert, (November 8, 2010) â€Å"Market Watch: Israel stocks fall; gas firms hit by tax reports†. The Wall Street Journal Digital Network. Web. http://www.marketwatch.com/story/israel-stocks-fall-tax-reports-hit-gas-firms-2010-11-08. This article reports on a slight decline in the Israeli stock market on Monday, November 8, 2010.
